Carb Myths- DEBUNKED!

MYTH #1: All carbs are the same

TRUTH #1: Carbs provide most of the body’s energy and are categorized as “simple” and “complex”.

Complex carbs take longer to digest than simple carbs do. This means they have a less immediate impact on blood sugar, causing it to rise more slowly. Consistent research links consumption of fiber rich carbs like beans, legumes, whole grains, vegetables and fruits with healthier and longer lives.

Simple carbs on the other hand are digested quickly, they can cause a spike in blood sugar that is higher and happens faster than when you eat complex carbs. This is why it’s best to limit simple carbohydrates, especially those with low nutritional value like white bread, white pasta, pastries, candy and soft drinks.

MYTH #2: Carbs lead to weight gain

FACT #2:  Weight gain is caused by consuming too many calories. Including complex carbs in portion sizes suitable for your needs can actually aid in weight loss.

MYTH #3: Carbs are unhealthy

FACT #3:  Carbs provide essential nutrients and are one of the main sources of calories for our bodies. Studies show that those who eat carbohydrates—especially those found in whole, natural foods like beans, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, have a lower risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and obesity.

MYTH #4: Carbs are only in bread, pasta and potatoes

TRUTH #4: Nope! All the fruit in your fruit bowl is made of carbs, and the vegetables you eat for dinner? They’re pretty much completely carbs too. Carbs are everywhere so if you were hoping to cut carbs or drop your carb intake to perilously low levels (think Atkins and Keto diets), then you might find it difficult to know what to eat!
