10 Rules of Thumb for Good Nutrition

What you eat has a profound impact on your overall health, energy, and well-being. Good nutrition isn’t just about looking good—it’s about feeling your best, preventing disease, and supporting your body’s daily functions. Here, I’m sharing my top 10 rules of thumb for good nutrition in no particular order.

  1. Eat Whole, Minimally Processed Foods – Focus on whole foods like fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats. Avoid heavily processed foods with added sugars and preservatives.
  2. Limit Added Sugars & Refined Carbs – Reduce intake of sugary drinks, candies, and refined grains like white bread and pastries to avoid energy crashes and inflammation.
  3. Fill Half Your Plate with Vegetables – Non-starchy veggies should take up at least half your plate to maximize fiber, vitamins, and minerals while keeping calories in check.
  4. The Fewer the Ingredients, the Better – When choosing packaged foods, look for items with a short, recognizable ingredient list to avoid unnecessary additives and preservatives.
  5. Don’t Drink Your Calories – Stick to water, herbal tea, or black coffee instead of sugary drinks like soda, juice, and flavored lattes that can add empty calories.
  6. Protein + Fiber = Satiety – Pairing protein (eggs, chicken, tofu) with fiber (veggies, whole grains, legumes) at meals and snacks helps keep you full and energized.
  7. Eat Until You’re 80% Full – Practice mindful eating by stopping when you’re satisfied rather than stuffed to improve digestion and prevent overeating.
  8. Prioritize Protein – Incorporate high-quality protein sources like lean meats, fish, eggs, beans, and nuts to support muscle health and keep you feeling full longer.

    9.  Everything in Moderation – Allow yourself treats in moderation to maintain a sustainable, balanced approach to eating without guilt.

10. Cook More Meals at least Home – Preparing meals at home allows you to control ingredients, portion sizes, and overall nutrition while saving money.

These practical tips can help you build sustainable, healthy eating habits without overcomplicating your approach to nutrition! If you learned something from this post, please like and share it with a friend. Together, we can take action against the growing health epidemic Americans are facing.
